Velvet Has Had Its ‘Last Dance’ in QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre, Potential Global Tour in 2017

After adding a whole new week of shows to its schedule, the four-week run of cabaret/disco/circus show Velvet came to a close last night at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC) Cremorne Theatre. Described by myself as a “night of music-induced euphoria” which presented “a great assortment of songs which was complemented by a strong cast, mesmerising lighting choices and good stage design”, it is sad to see the show leave.

Director Craig Hott sought to take guests into a hedonistic world, which pitted dazzling acrobatics against disco divas in a sexy, spectacular, sparkling and slightly sadomasochistic show. Taking the stage was singer/songwriter Brendan Maclean who headed the cast, and was joined by an ensemble of talent including muscle man Stephen Williams, hula boy extraordinaire Craig Reid, acrobatic wunderkind Mirko Köckenberger, sizzling aerialist Emma Goh, the sassy sirens Chaska Halliday and Rechelle Mansour, musical director and mix master Joe Accaria and renown Australian diva Marcia Hines.

So where is Velvet headed next? Unfortunately it isn’t all that clear. Following a 2016 season which has so far covered Brisbane, the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Adelaide Fringe – their website now lists “Stay Tuned for 2017 Global Tour Dates!”. Seems that while Velvet’s Boogie Wonderland might be off-limits for the next few months, they could be bringing it to audiences around the world as of next year.
