Disney’s The Lion King has become the highest selling musical presale in Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) history, breaking a more than a decade long record held also by The Lion King during its previous 2014 Brisbane season. The musical last appeared in Brisbane in 2014, when its entire 19-week season sold out.
The milestone was reached before tickets became available to the wider public, with the general sale opening at 9am tomorrow. Following the level of demand recorded during the presale, Disney and QPAC will release tickets for the production’s full 16-week Brisbane season. Performances will continue until Sunday 7 March 2027, with organisers confirming that no further extensions will be possible.
Returning to QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, the production will once again feature the large-scale staging, artistry and music associated with its international seasons. The theatre auditorium will be reconfigured to accommodate the production and create its immersive setting.
QPAC Chief Executive Rachel Healy said the presale result reflected the continued popularity of musical theatre among Queensland audiences and outlined preparations for the production’s November opening.
We are delighted to share this record-breaking presale result which demonstrates the strength of Queensland audiences’ love of musical theatre.
The scale of this beloved production is unsurpassed, with the Lyric Theatre auditorium readying itself to be reconfigured to create the immersive world of THE LION KING and we can’t wait to welcome our first audiences in November.
After recent events of musicals across Australia cancelling entire tour legs or majority of seasons due to cost pressures, it is reassuring to see that a musical is receiving strong ticket sales right out of the gate. However, with those cost pressures typically being aligned with a rising cost of living crisis, it does raise concern that given the short time between Brisbane season announcement and pre-sale, that many who don’t have disposable income on hand may miss out on the opportunity for good seats once they can afford it, with all tickets to go on sale tomorrow over incremental ticket releases. But at the very least, here’s hoping that the historical demand has not seen scalpers jump in and purchase swaths of tickets for substantial markups.
Ticketing information for the production can be found via the musical’s official Australian website.
