ABBA’s music returns to Sydney in a new form next year. Mamma Mia! The Party, the theatrical dining experience created by ABBA founding member Björn Ulvaeus, will premiere in Australia at Sydney Event Centre at The Star in March 2027. Tickets go on sale from Thursday 12 November 2026.
Sydney follows Stockholm, where the production is celebrating ten years, and London, where it is in its seventh year. Across both cities, the show has welcomed almost 1.5 million guests. The move to Sydney is part of the production’s wider international expansion, with organisers pointing to Australia’s long-running fondness for ABBA and Sydney’s standing as a destination for tourism, culture and live entertainment.
Rather than a traditional stage show, the experience centres on dinner. Guests are seated at Nikos’ family-run taverna, a Greek setting inspired by the island of Skopelos, where much of the 2008 film adaptation of Mamma Mia! was shot. Over the evening, guests are served a four-course Greek meal while a romantic story plays out around the tables, performed by a live band and a cast of 20 musicians and performers. The setlist draws on ABBA’s catalogue, including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo.
After the performance, the venue turns into a 1970s-style disco, with a DJ playing ABBA songs and guests welcome to stay on to sing and dance.
Björn Ulvaeus, who created the experience, said Australia was a natural fit for the production’s next stop.
Bringing Mamma Mia! The Party to Sydney is a hugely exciting milestone for us. From the very beginning, this experience was created to bring people together through music, storytelling and joy, and it has been wonderful to see audiences in Stockholm and London embrace it so wholeheartedly. Australia has always felt like a natural next step for us, and Sydney – with its energy, international appeal and love of live entertainment – is the perfect city for this next chapter.
Sophie Arendt, Managing Director of Mamma Mia! The Party for Pophouse Entertainment, described Sydney’s place in the show’s global plans.
Sydney is a defining milestone in the international growth of Mamma Mia! The Party. As a globally recognised city with a vibrant live entertainment scene and strong appeal for both local and visiting audiences, it is the ideal destination for our Australian premiere and an exciting next step in our broader global rollout.
The Australian production also links to ABBA’s history in the country. Paul Dainty AO, President and CEO of TEG DAINTY, promoted the band’s only Australian tour in 1977, and he reflected on that connection.
Bringing Mamma Mia! The Party to Australia feels particularly special for me. I had the extraordinary privilege of promoting ABBA’s first and only Australian tour back in 1977, and I still remember the phenomenal excitement that followed them across the country. Australia’s love affair with ABBA has never really ended – their music has become part of our cultural fabric.
To be now working with Björn and Pophouse to bring this extraordinary celebration of ABBA’s music to Sydney feels like a wonderful full-circle moment. Mamma Mia! The Party is pure joy – it brings people together to eat, sing, dance and experience these songs in an entirely new way – and I can’t wait for Australian audiences to experience it.”
