With the annual Gold Coast Film Festival less than a month away now and the launch of the new “Film” section of The Otaku’s Study, I have decided to over the next couple of week highlight films that I am very eager to be checking out during the event and will hopefully have a review up for in the very near future.
While you might initially think that the first title on this list would be one of the anime screenings held in the latter days of the event, and overall I am pretty excited about them, as a lover of a good storyline then it was hard to pass up on considering this series which I feel will tick all my boxes in being a fantastic storyline. I am referring to Any Day Now which is set to be screened during a single session on the 6th April 2014 at 12:30PM. While not one of the many Australian premieres on offer during the event, this will be the very first time that Any Day Now has been screened within Queensland.
The trailer really stood out to me as highlighting a number of culture issues that we as a society have made strides towards ensuring equality and fairness – and has been the first trailer to make me tear up in quite a long time. I look forward to seeing how this ends up turning out.
Any Day Now was directed by Travis Fine (The Space Between) and stars Alan Cumming (The Good Wife), Garret Dillahunt (No Country for Old Men) and Isaac Levya (Debut role in acting). It has been described as “a powerful story set in the late 1970s detailing the struggles of a gay couple who try and adopt a mentally handicapped teenager“. To date it has picked up a number of accolades and international awards including Best Feature at the GLAAD Awards 2013 and the Audience Award at the Chicago International Film Festival 2012 among others.
Check back next week for another one of my top picks for the event!
