Flying Arts Alliance is set to host Fibres and Vessels, a solo exhibition by emerging Indigenous artist Clare Jacque Vasquez. The exhibition will be on display from 3 to 17 June at the Judith Wright Centre.
Vasquez’s upbringing, split between urban environments and her Grandmother’s Country in north-west New South Wales, significantly influences her work. Her art captures memories and moments from being raised alongside three generations of Gomeroi/Kamilaroi women, navigating the repercussions of cultural changes. She is a finalist in the 2024 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, and also represented Australia at the 2022 Art for Change Prize in London at Saatchi Gallery
Her artistic technique employs a variety of natural brushes, fingertips, branches, and self-made tools to layer acrylic paint and impasto. This meticulous process, taking up to 12 weeks, transforms a two-dimensional canvas into a tactile and sculptural painting. Her works appear etched and scarred with ancestral narratives, seeking to offer a profound commentary on memory, identity, and connection to the land.
Commenting on her upcoming exhibition, Vasquez shared:
Each artwork in Fibres and Vessels is a tribute to the stories and weaving practices passed down through my family. It delves into the intricate connections between us and our ancestral lands.
You can see her work on display at the Fibres and Vessels exhibition at the Judith Wright Arts Centre Foyer (420 Brunswick St & Cnr, Berwick St, Fortitude Valley) from 3 to 17 June 2024, with a dedicated opening event with artist talk taking place 6pm until 8pm on 6 June 2024. The exhibition is free to all guests.
