Who is up for something a little bit more retro? Say…. a 52 episode anime series from the 1960’s which has recently been remastered?

The third and final announcement made at Hanabee Entertainment’s Sydney Manga and Anime Show (SMASH!) panel this year was Princess Knight which the company plan for release throughout Australia in two collections – the first on the 18th September 2013 and the second sometime during October 2013.

Both collections which are based off the manga by Osamu Tezuka (Of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion acclaim) will features half the series but due to localization differences will only feature the mono-quality English dub. Each collection will set you back around $49.99.

Hanabee’s planned release follows the North American release published by Right Stuf’s Nozomi Entertainment division.

Once upon a time, in the faraway kingdom of Silverland, a princess named Sapphire was born. Thanks to the prank of a mischievous little angel, Sapphire ended up with both the blue heart of a boy and the pink heart of a girl. Thus, the new little princess would be as rambunctious and brave as she was gentle and caring.

However, all was not well in Silverland. By law, only a son could inherit the throne. So, to stop the evil Duke Duralumon from being next in line to rule the kingdom, the King announced to his subjects that Sapphire was a boy!

Now, several years later, everyone in the kingdom sees Sapphire as a swashbuckling prince. Very few people know her secret. But the Duke still lurks in the shadows, waiting for a chance to make his move… So begins the story of Sapphire – the courageous Princess Knight – as she fends off the Duke’s wicked schemes and fights for justice and the happiness of her people!

  1. I kinda dig the retro, Walt-Disney-inspired look of some of this old, old stuff (all the Astroboy-derived characters really do evoke Pinocchio to me now). But man, they seem to lose a lot of the charm when “in motion”. And yes, I use that with judicious quotation marks because, if it’s anything like Astroboy, there’s very little actual animation going on. So I hope this thing isn’t THAT ancient. I never heard of it before.

The retro style always looks great when redone for modern projects though. Like Rintaro’s Metropolis, or the 009-1 anime.

EDIT: Oh; I see my fears were completely unfounded. It’s actually quite nice looking — a lot better than Astroboy at any rate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0DaeCtJTG0
