After a very mixed bag of spin-off releases, the Neptunia series is getting its first mainline entry in more than ten years. Idea Factory International has announced Hyperspace Neptunia: Unlimited, the next canonical RPG in the franchise, launching in 2027 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. The last mainline release was Megadimension Neptunia VII in 2016. Developed by Compile Heart, the game sees producer Hikaru Yasui and series illustrator Tsunako return. Tsunako has created new illustrations and newly designed Goddesses for the game.
The story begins with the end of the world. After an asteroid strikes and despair takes over, only the Goddess Neptune is left, alone in a white void. Guided by a mysterious voice, she finds numbers marked on her cheek, signalling a new challenge against Doomsday. By activating a “retry”, Neptune begins a loop of endings and new beginnings, meeting new allies and enemies and pushing through repeated defeats as she and her friends face the true Doomsday. Neptune, Noire, Blanc and Vert return to save the parallel worlds, joined by other familiar faces and new characters including Rouge/Red Heart, Ciel/Blue Heart and Anna + Lotte/Eclipse Heart.
Flight is a major new feature. Dungeons are pitched as being larger than in previous games, and the Goddesses can switch seamlessly between running and flying to explore waterways, rooftops and other hidden areas, battling enemies and finding special items along the way. Flight carries into combat too, with Goddesses able to transform into their Goddess Forms to attack from above. Battles also feature new EXE Drive animations, a reworked combo system and large world bosses.
Customisation has been expanded as well. Players can change the Goddesses’ colours, attach accessories wherever they like, adjusting their size, position and colour. Processor Unit equipment found in dungeons can be strengthened to boost stats, and the returning Disc Make system lets players craft new abilities.
