Bandai Namco Entertainment has announced that Shadow Labyrinth, a dark reinterpretation of its classic Pac-Man franchise, will launch on 18 July 2025. Developed by Bandai Namco Studios, the 2D action platformer will be available digitally for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.
Set on a hostile alien planet, Shadow Labyrinth introduces players to a dark world where they must explore, hunt, and consume creatures in order to survive. Players take on the role of Swordsman No. 8, a warrior accompanied by PUCK—a small yellow companion whose design evokes the iconic Pac-Man character. Rather than chasing ghosts in mazes, players in Shadow Labyrinth must fight and consume enemies to evolve and become the apex predator in an increasingly dangerous environment.
Newly revealed gameplay footage showcases various mechanics and playable modes, including a powerful transformation known as GAIA—a massive robotic mech capable of delivering devastating attacks, offering players a significant boost during boss battles. This joins other modes such as the melee-focused Swordsman No. 8 combat and a Mini PUCK mode, which channels traditional Pac-Man gameplay through rail-riding exploration of smaller areas.
While the game introduces an entirely new protagonist, Shadow Labyrinth seeks to tie back to its roots in as many ways possible, incorporating elements from Pac-Man and other classic Bandai Namco arcade titles. According to the publisher, the game’s narrative and level design aim to blend nostalgic references with modern 2D platforming mechanics, offering a fresh yet familiar experience.
Two digital editions of the game are available for pre-order on all platforms except the Nintendo Switch, which will be available for digital pre-order soon:
- Digital Standard Edition: Includes the base game and a pre-order bonus featuring original arcade sound effects.
- Digital Deluxe Edition: Includes the base game, original arcade sound effects, a digital artbook, and a digital soundtrack.
