German independent studio ROTxBLAU has announced Grandma(88), a hand-drawn mystery thriller adventure scheduled to launch on PC via Steam later this year. The game places players in conflict with its narrator, an elderly grandmother whose memories directly shape the world around them. Players take the role of a young granddaughter visiting her dying grandmother in search of answers about their family’s buried history. Her investigation leads into a shifting maze of memories, contradictions and concealed truths, with the grandmother controlling which parts of the past can be explored.
At the centre of Grandma(88) is a player-versus-narrator mechanic that makes the grandmother a guide, opponent and occasional ally. Challenging her account of events can cause rooms, pathways, characters, objects and clues to appear, disappear or gain new meanings. These changes may reveal additional information while obscuring other parts of the story. Trust will also influence how the investigation develops. Questioning the grandmother too aggressively may cause her to become angry or refuse to cooperate, while remaining cautious could protect the relationship at the cost of leaving important secrets undiscovered. As players move further through her memories, the inconsistencies in her story begin to point towards a family secret with connections reaching back to the Nazi era.
The studio pitches the game as being rooted in intimacy, silence, repression and the stories families use to preserve or soften their past. These themes are incorporated into a nonlinear adventure featuring puzzles, atmospheric pixel art, psychological horror, immersive sound design and choices intended to carry emotional consequences.
