Devolver Digital and developer Doinksoft have announced that their upcoming title, Dark Scrolls, is set to launch on 28 May 2026. The game will be available for both PC and Nintendo Switch players upon release.
This project seeks to combine fantasy action platforming with shmup mechanics and roguelite progression. Players can choose from a roster of nine different characters, including traditional options such as an axe-throwing warrior, a magician, and a thief. The lineup also features more unconventional heroes, such as an alien, a dog, and a rat that plays the saxophone. Each character is equipped with unique skills, specific side objectives, and customizable trinkets to alter their playstyle.
The gameplay loop involves navigating through levels that are procedurally generated from a collection of hand-crafted rooms. This structure is intended to offer different branching paths and encounters during every session. Success in the game relies on reflexes and quick decision-making, particularly when facing various enemies and bosses. Players can tackle these challenges alone or participate in cooperative play through both local and online modes.
Between combat segments, players can visit an in-game establishment known as Bruce and Goose’s Shoppe. By spending coins collected during their runs, players can purchase various perks, new attacks, and summoned allies. These abilities can be stacked to increase the player’s offensive power as the difficulty of the game increases.
Visually and audiologically, Dark Scrolls strives to emulate the style of classic arcade games. It features old school graphics, music, and sound effects, which are integrated with modern design principles and control schemes. Dark Scrolls is the latest project from Doinksoft, the studio previously responsible for titles such as Gato Roboto and Gunbrella.
