Nippon Ichi Software America has confirmed that the Crossbell duology arc from the long running The Legend of Heroes series will be arriving on modern hardware. Both The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and its sequel, The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure, are being developed for the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch 2. While each game is set to be sold individually on digital storefronts, the publisher will also release a physical collection that bundles both titles together.
These new versions are designed to utilize the capabilities of the newer platforms by offering a variety of performance enhancements. Players will be able to experience the games in 4K resolution and at speeds of up to 120 FPS. The updates also provide a choice between original and upscaled textures. Specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2, the games will include support for mouse input.
The first entry, Trails from Zero, introduces the city state of Crossbell, which serves as a major economic hub situated between the competing Erebonian Empire and the Republic of Calvard. The story follows Lloyd Bannings, a young man who joins the Crossbell Police Department to follow the path of his late brother. He is assigned to the Special Support Section, a new division tasked with handling minor community requests rather than standard police work. Alongside teammates Elie MacDowell, Randy Orlando, and Tio Plato, Lloyd uncovers the secrets hidden within the city. Features like High Speed Mode will return to allow players to accelerate the pace of travel and combat.
Picking up months later, Trails to Azure serves as the conclusion to the Crossbell story arc. Despite the peace achieved in the previous game, the Special Support Section must deal with rising international tensions and the emergence of various organizations with hidden agendas. The sequel introduces several new combat mechanics such as the Burst system and Back Attacks, while also providing a customizable car for traversal. Characters from the Trails of Cold Steel series are also set to appear during the narrative. Players with save data from Trails from Zero can import their progress to unlock alternate dialogue and additional character interactions.
