Indie developer Kenny Sun, in collaboration with publisher Devolver Digital, has announced Ball x Pit, a new survival roguelite that combines base-building, ball-fusing, and brick-breaking mechanics. A playable demo is now available via Steam, accompanied by a behind-the-scenes documentary titled Ball x Pit: The Kenny Sun Story, which explores the personal and creative journey behind the game’s development. Ball x Pit is slated for release in 2025 on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S.
Set in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event that obliterated the once-great city of Ballbylon, the game centres on the yawning pit left in its wake – a mysterious chasm that now draws treasure hunters from across the world. With few returning from its depths, the pit is a deadly battleground teeming with aggressive creatures determined to end expeditions before they even begin.
Players are armed with a growing arsenal of enchanted projectiles, gradually building power through repeated use. The gameplay revolves around mastering and upgrading these attacks, fusing magical spitballs into stronger variants, and uncovering potent combinations among the 60-plus types available. The fusion system is at the heart of the game’s combat loop, encouraging players to experiment with hundreds of potential outcomes to optimise their build.
Progress in Ball x Pit is not solely measured by survival. Players are tasked with rebuilding civilisation by developing New Ballbylon, a hub area that expands as new structures are added. With over 70 unique buildings to construct, each contributing new gameplay enhancements or unlocking additional content, the settlement becomes a strategic base of operations. As the city grows, so does the player’s ability to delegate tasks to supporting characters, ensuring resources continue to flow while they return to the depths of the pit.
Exploration is central to the game’s structure. The pit branches out into a variety of biomes, including deserts, icy caves, and wild forests. Each environment introduces distinct hazards, enemies, and screen-filling bosses designed to challenge even the most prepared hunters. Along the way, players can recruit additional treasure seekers, each with their own set of skills and upgradable mechanics that can significantly alter a playthrough’s style and strategy.
