Shared during the recent PlayStation State of Play livestream and joining a small number of octopus-themed games released over the years, Darwin’s Paradox is an action-adventure platformer that puts players in the role of Darwin, an octopus taken from the sea and placed inside a mysterious food factory. Developed by ZDT Studio and published by Konami on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam), the game sets out to provide an immersive experience above and below sealevel.
The developers aimed to authentically capture the unique abilities of an octopus, incorporating movement mechanics such as wall climbing, camouflage, and ink-based evasion tactics. The DualSense controller is set to play a key role in enhancing immersion, with haptic feedback allowing players to feel the resistance of Darwin’s ink shots, the tension of his grip as he scales surfaces, and the impact of environmental hazards. Players will also use Darwin’s ink strategically to disable security cameras, escape from searchlights, and navigate dangerous factory sections.
Visually, although this may differ between platforms and system specs, Darwin’s Paradox features HDR support, raytracing, and volumetric shadows, offering a highly detailed and atmospheric world. Players can choose between a Beauty Mode running at 4K and 60fps or a Performance Mode with dynamic 4K scaling and a locked 60fps. Audio cues play a crucial role in gameplay, with the DualSense controller’s built-in speaker providing environmental sounds such as approaching enemies or alarm signals, further enhancing the sense of presence in Darwin’s world.
