Let’s be really frank here, pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) were chaos to say the least. Just following my posts from one retailer over one day, they managed to sell through their entire 2020 stock on Thursday, and as of yesterday just cancelled taking console pre-orders outright. Stories from across the globe tell a similar tale, with negative public sentiment around outlandish scalper prices and uncertainty about when they will get their hands on the console. This is far from the advanced notice and pre-registration campaign that Sony Interactive Entertainment had originally described.
Posting on the official PlayStation social media channels earlier today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the following statement around how pre-orders went:
Let’s be honest: PS5 preorders could have been a lot smoother. We truly apologize for that.

Over the next few days, we will release more PS5 consoles for preorder – retailers will share more details.

Expect to hear more from Sony over the coming days around how/when they will begin opening new pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 once again, and whether they are looking at stock closer to or on launch day, or in 2021.
