While many games on display during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation 5 Showcase earlier today focused on games with lots of graphical fidelity, the newly announced Goodbye Volcano High was a refreshing change from approach by featuring (still impressive) anime-style visuals and an approach to gameplay clearly different from the others on show.
In development by indie studio KO_OP, Goodbye Volcano High is an upcoming narrative-driven game which they boast as featuring “a queer narrative created by a diverse team”, “fully voice-acted cast featuring Lachlan Watson” and “cinematic and musical minigames that blend seamlessly into the narrative”.
Goodbye Volcano High focuses on 18-year-old dinosaur Fang, who is more concerned about their band going viral than they are about what happens after graduation. But when graduation is upstaged by terrible news, everything changes. Will they find time to figure themselves out? Can they balance navigating a changing world with a budding romance? During hard times, what do we owe each other?
I am really excited to see more from this game, especially since it venues that line between video game and visual novel which very few western development studios tend to focus on. Expect to see it available to purchase in 2021 on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC platforms.
