Comprising of the original Crash Bandicoot and its sequels Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, license-holder Activision turned heads when they re-released the iconic platformer trilogy to current generation consoles with the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in 2017.
Original developer Naughty Dog may have since moved on to other projects such as a little thing called The Last of Us Part II, more than two decades later, an official fourth instalment in the mainline Crash Bandicoot series has been confirmed.
Developed from the ground-up by the team at Toys for Bob (The development team who worked on the remasters of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro), Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is being pitched as “the true sequel the the original trilogy”. Expected for release in only a few months, you will be able to nab yourself a copy on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One from 2 October 2020.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time’s narrative is exactly as its title states – it’s about time! The story takes place following the events of Crash Bandicoot: Warped, picking up after Neo Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy and Uka Uka were last stranded on a distant planet. After decades of fruitless attempts, the trio finally make their escape, ripping an Evil-Scientist-sized hole in the fabric of space-time in the process. Now all that stands between them and total dominion over the multiverse are two fuzzy marsupials from N. Sanity Island.
Players are tasked to fill the shoes of Crash and Coco, as they work to uncover four Quantum Masks, the guardians of space and time, that will give them the ability to bend the rules of reality and gain advanced ways to conquer dangerous obstacles. One of the confirmed masks is the Time Mask, which slows everything down. Neo Cortex will also become playable, providing an alternative perspective to the tale.
This does not serve as the fourth game in the series, with other console games such as Twinsanity and Wrath of Cortex having been developed following the original trilogy. Factoring in the legacy that Naughty Dog’s original trilogy left on the video game industry as a whole, there should be high expectations of any sequel, given mixed reception of other sequels once development was handed off to other studios.
