HOTA’s Inaugural Secret Broadway Evening to Feature Simon Burke

HOTA: Home of the Arts on the Gold Coast are this year presenting a series of “Secret Broadway” evenings in 2020, which they describe as “unforgettable evenings of musical theatre favourites, with numbers performed by special guests from Broadway and beyond. It’s part late night sing-a-long and part homage to musical theatre and cabaret“. A chapter of ‘The Secret Life of the American Musical: How Broadway Shows are Built‘ inspires each cabaret performance, in addition to a type of musical song.

The first performance will commence on Saturday, February 22nd 2020, at 7.30pm in Theatre 1. The first performance takes on the fitting theme of ‘curtains up’, featuring the opening numbers of Broadway musicals designed to get you pumped for the story ahead. Classics such as Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’ from Singin’ in the Rain and I Hope I Get It from a Chorus Line are some examples of songs to be performed.

It has been confirmed that Australian star of screen and stage Simon Burke will be performing in this month’s Secret Broadway. While I have many memories of watching Simon Burke perform on Play School was a young lad, it was his performance as Edna in Harvest Rain’s Arena Spectacular of Hairspray the Musical which stands out in my mind even today. Complemented by hilarious writing which poked fun at The Sound of Music next door at QPAC, great on-stage dynamic with Wayne Scott Kermond and a great singing voice – his performance was something I still chuckle at while reminiscing.

Joining Mr Burke on-stage will be host Lance Horne, Broadway star Shoshana Bean and Brisbane-born musical theatre performer Jordan Malone who is currently performing in the Gordon Frost Organisation’s current Australian tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Going to be around the Gold Coast on February 22nd? Tickets will be available from $38.25 and $79.00 dependent on several factors and are purchasable via the Home of the Arts Official Website or their box office (07) 5588 4000 during regular open hours.
