So I have gone down the rabbit hole. What was initially meant to be me sharing some photography I took during media calls for a couple of stage musicals in recent years, has swelled into trawling through my entire photo archive. Therefore, the “In Photo” photographic retrospective will be going for the remainder of 2019 – each day showcasing photos from another theatrical production in the latter half of this decade.
In 2016, The Arts Centre Gold Coast (Now known as Home of the Arts or HOTA) held an in-house produced production of Disney Theatrical’s Mary Poppins the Musical. Although unable to match the incredibly high standard set in 2015 by their production of Miss Saigon, this was a very enjoyable show for both families and those who, like myself, grew up with Mary Poppins in their VHS player. You can read my full review of this season HERE.
This performance featured Queensland talent including Georgina Hopson as Mary Poppins, Max Patterson as Bert, Carla Tooma as Winnifred Banks and Stephen Hurst as George Banks – in addition to local children who performed in the role of Jane and Michael Banks.
While not too many musicals make their way through HOTA every year, the ones that do in my opinion are usually of high quality. This year they played host to Matt Ward Entertainment’s Wicked which was an amazing night out, while next year, they will be presenting One Eyed Man Production’s Spamalot which I am also looking forward to seeing.
Below are some images I captured from the show’s Media Call approximately a week before performances began. While this season has come and gone, definitely keep an eye out for local productions of Mary Poppins in your area.
