A World at War With Video Games

Take That (In-Game) Snap Daily Photo

A few different decisions in the early 1980s lead to a parallel world where the video game industry never thrived. In-fact, video games became an illegal commodity as per the government’s “Think of the Children Act of 1986”.

Even to this day, arcades never received technology capable of playing anything more sophisticated than Pong and Tetris. But this has not but a stop to the boom in black market venues, providing those in-the-know with an affordable place to game, enjoy some foods and continue building upon the secretively-run industry.

But secrecy of these is key… as you never know when a member of the “NO GAMERS” military squad will discover your location, and come in guns blazing.

Oh, and don’t worry, these weapons might look harmful but they shoot a sticky web trapping anyone caught inside it

Thankfully, we don’t live in such a society. It sounds like a truly post-apocalyptic nightmare!

This latest screenshot was captured in Second Life from Linden Labs, and features a whole lot of stuff I have collected over the past year and a half. Second Life does have a reputation for more adult content (there is no shortage of that if you explicitly look for it). However, those interested in using it to build custom avatars and take great photographs will find a lot on offer from the user-created worlds, purchasable content for your avatars, a high level of customisation and clients dedicated to taking fantastic photos. Just beware that with high-quality content comes a potentially high real-world cost for digital assets.

Take That (In-Game) Snap Daily Photo is an off-shoot of the Take That (In-Game) Snap article series, in which the first article focusing on Final Fantasy XIV was recently published. This looks at, celebrates and critiques how video game developers have implemented professional photography-like systems into their games. It will cover how the systems handle, just how accessible they are and, where applicable, how a modding community might be making these tools even better. With this Daily Photo spin-off series, I will be sharing individual photos from the games either covered or soon-to-be-covered in the series.
