Free Collars Kingdom – Volume 3

-

freecollar

This volume is the conclusion to the three part series by Takuya Fujima. Personally, I have found the last two rather good but does the third one live up to my expectations? Read more after the jump.

Artwork

The artwork in this volume is basically the same as the other two volumes of Free Collars Kingdom. It is relatively high quality and some pages such as the double page spread on page 62-63 have that extra detail added to it which adds to the feeling of friendship that the Free Collars have between one another, despite what is mentioned in the first volume. A lot of scenes, especially within the last few chapters have increasing blocks of white background. As I have said many times before, whilst white background is okay ocasionally, after the first few times it does give off the impression of laziness to draw in a background, but that is just my opinion. Several characters were added, even briefly that were not designed that sloppily. To summarise, not a bad job, definately not the best but effective enough.

Characters

The only new characters in this volume is Minky (Who was added at the end of the last volume) and Puriam, the brother of Siam who was killed in a car accident after humans tried to take him away. To be honest, there was little character development in comparison to other volumes of the Free Collars, however Cyan has become a bit more strategic in his actions, especially after Chapter 14 where he can see through other enemies tactics. Siam and her crew recieved the most development with the history of Siam being revealed and why she has come to resent the Free Collars, alongside A-Ko and I-ko whose breed is also revealed embarassingly.

Storyline

The storyline was appropriate for the storyline, althrough I do believe Takuya Fujima could have gone for another volume or so. The storyline begins with Siam’s army invading other hideouts with the Free Collars stepping in to protect them from being “exterminated”. To summarise the rest of the storyline in a spoiler free way, it involves them fighting to protect Nyan-Man and their hideout from the army which is harder to do with everyone split up. In the end, Cyan has to make a heartbreaking decision…… Not such a good summary but you get the general idea. I think the storyline was good enough to conclude the series but as stated above, could really have used another volume as it seemed to go by all too fast when the other two volumes were basically light in comparison to this one.

Extras

The following extras are included in this volume of the manga:

  • Authors Note.
  • Honorifics Explained.
  • Cute art between each chapter.
  • Free Collars Love Theater
  • Thanks from Takuya Fujima
  • Translation Notes
  • Advertisements

Personal Opinion

I think this would be my least favorite volume out of the three, as I did feel it went a bit too quickly for my liking, but it is definately an enjoyable read. Hopefully they will adapt it into something like an anime (Getting my hopes up) as it does have potential.
