Rozen Maiden Manga – Volume 3

Another manga that I picked up recently was the third volume of Rozen Maiden. I read the original two in my local library however unfortunately, the store that I went to did not have any of the first two in stock. So… here is my take on the third volume of a very popular and successful series.

Artwork: While the artwork is not some of the best I have seen, most of the time it effectually uses the correct style of art to portray the mood. For example, if there is a comedic part in the chapter, the characters will be drawn more to suit the mood, such as more chibi style face designs during phase 14 where Suiseiseki starts a war against Jun and Hinaichigo. The backdrop is also well planned, and isn’t to extravagant most of the time, instead opting for simple, bringing more of the focus back onto other aspects such as characters, moods and storyline. However, at times, they also went well beyond what could be expected such as Suiseseki summoning vines after Jun becomes her medium for example.

Characters: There is much more focus put onto Suiseiseki and Souseiseki this volume with them trying to save Souseiseki from her “evil” master. This follows on through most of the manga except for Phase 14 where the war between Suiseieki and the “Chibis”. Also an interesting development was what happened with Shinku losing her right arm, as stated in the description of the manga, and slowly losing will to fight anymore. Lots of careful thought was put into this and it payed off.

Storyline: The storyline was spread out well throughout the volume and I am pleased with how it came out in the end. Definitely kept me interested till the end and made me want to pick up the next volume and read from there. That is basically all I can say on this.

Extras: The extras for this volume included:

  • Artwork for each phrase introduction
  • Very well done Character List
  • Story Description up to that point
  • Three Titles Collaboration Comic
  • Interesting Manga Advertisments

Could use something more like translation notes, but overall it is acceptable.

Overall Quality of the Manga: The manga was in the normal packaging for a manga. With the laminated texture of it (I can’t remember what it is called). There were no printing errors on the pages at all and it overall was printed on very good quality paper. I have had it over a week now and there is no signs of the book breaking apart at the spine. Overall, I am very happy with the quality.

Overall Score:

Artwork: 4 (B)

Characters: 4.5 (A)

Storyline: 5 (A)

Extras: 3.5 (C)

Quality: 4.5 (A)

Overall: 4.3 (A)

Description: Jun finds himself stuck with Suiseiseki, who is trying to find her twin. She shows her powers to Jun, which makes a little tree grow in his dream. And when Jun sees the dolls undressing, he becomes self-conscious–he realizes that he feels something special for Shinku… But everything comes to a crashing halt when Suiseiseki’s hatred for humans begins a fight that escalates into an all-out brawl–and Shinku may have to literally give her right arm to save everyone before the dream collapses!
