Pony Canyon has released the official main trailer and key visual for the upcoming animated feature film To You in the Beyond, which will open in Japanese cinemas on 9 October 2026. International release details have not yet been announced.
The film is based on Akiko Abe’s coming-of-age novel of the same name. Seeking to combine romance, mystery and fantasy, To You in the Beyond follows high school student Kazuki Tsukigase after personal circumstances lead him to leave the city and begin a new life on the remote island of Tokishima. The island is home to a mysterious location known as the Spirited Away Cove. During early summer, Kazuki discovers an unconscious girl named Nanao Aika on the beach. Nanao claims to have travelled from 1974 and is taken in by Kazuki and a man named Takatsu, who is also present when she is found.
Kazuki begins visiting Nanao after school, gradually forming a connection with her as questions surrounding her arrival, the island and the cove continue to build. Their relationship becomes tied to secrets from both the past and present, including a truth that Nanao eventually reveals to Kazuki.
The new trailer begins with Kazuki, voiced by Hiiro Ishibashi, reflecting on the mysterious encounter that shaped his time on Tokishima. Nanao, voiced by Anna Nagase, soon makes it clear that the Tokishima around her is not the island she remembers from her own time.
Much of the trailer focuses on the pair’s developing relationship, including scenes of Kazuki and Nanao walking along the seawall, sharing ice cream and spending time together during the summer. The mood shifts as the trailer introduces references to an untold past, lasting emotional scars and a hidden truth. Kazuki is shown struggling at a piano while confronting difficult memories, while Nanao runs through heavy rain as the circumstances surrounding the two characters become increasingly serious.
Singer-songwriter Tota provides the film’s insert songs as well as its newly written theme song, “Olive.” The track accompanies the quieter summer scenes in the trailer before continuing into its more dramatic second half.
A new main visual has also been released (available to the left), featuring an original illustration by character designer and chief animation director Hechima. It depicts Kazuki playing a grand piano at the edge of the water while Nanao stands nearby in a white dress.
Four additional Japanese voice actors are also confirmed to have joined the cast. Sumire Uesaka will play Tamaki Mishima, a popular honour student who attends school with Kazuki and Nanao. Wataru Hatano voices Shuji Aiba, an easygoing and sincere boy who was raised on the island. Nobuhiko Okamoto will portray Akimitsu Yano, a lively close friend within the group, while Yoshitsugu Matsuoka voices Yoshiki Suka, a classmate who openly antagonises Kazuki. The new additions join previously announced cast members Hiiro Ishibashi, Anna Nagase and Shimba Tsuchiya.
To You in the Beyond is directed by Junichi Wada, whose credits include HIGH CARD. Sayaka Kuwamura, known for Strobe Edge and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, has written the screenplay. Hechima is overseeing the character designs and serving as chief animation director, following recent work on Cosmic Princess Kaguya!. Animation production is being handled by TMS ENTERTAINMENT.
