Daniel Fineberg, co-creator of Sable, has announced his next game, In the Drift, during the Wholesome Games Showcase. Developed by Fineberg alongside a team of friends and collaborators, with funding support from Phantom Friends, In the Drift is a narrative platformer planned for release on PC via Steam.
The game is set in The Belt, a scattered stretch of asteroids in deep space. Players take on the role of Luna, a young engineer responsible for keeping the people of the Belt connected as the region slowly drifts apart. Pitched as a game about fixing the internet in space, In the Drift will see players travelling across asteroids in a truck to repair rusted radio towers and other failing infrastructure. Between jobs, Luna returns to her ship, where players can explore, spend time with the crew and learn more about the people around her.
The story aims to focus on human connection in a world that is gradually coming undone. Alongside its narrative elements, In the Drift will feature light puzzle platforming, lonely space landscapes and around five hours of gameplay. The game will also include a feline first mate and a dreamy soundtrack by Laryssa Okada, whose credits include Manifold Garden, Dorfromantik and Last Time I Saw You.
