Xbox Announces January Developer_Direct Featuring Fable, Forza Horizon 6 And Game Freak

Microsoft has confirmed plans to commence its 2026 schedule with the return of the Developer_Direct broadcast. As the company marks the 25th anniversary of the Xbox platform, this fourth installment of the showcase format will focus on upcoming titles from a range of developers – with a particular focus on Playground Games and Game Freak.

The broadcast aims to provide an inside look at the development process, presented directly by the creators working on the software. This year’s presentation will highlight a mix of established franchises and new intellectual property. For Australian viewers, the stream is scheduled to air on Friday, 23 January 2026 at 5.00 am AEDT.

The UK-based studio Playground Games is set to feature heavily in the broadcast with updates on two major projects. First, the studio will provide the debut gameplay reveal for Forza Horizon 6. The open-world racer has been confirmed to take place in Japan, offering players a chance to navigate diverse landscapes across the region. The segment promises a deep dive into the game’s features and a look at how the team has recreated the Japanese environment.

Secondly, the showcase will offer a look at the reboot of Fable. Developers will guide viewers through a return to the fictional land of Albion. The presentation is expected to cover core gameplay mechanics and thematic elements central to the series, such as player choice, consequences, and British humour.

The Tokyo-based studio Game Freak, best known as the developers of the Pokémon video games, will present a look at Beast of Reincarnation. Originally revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase last year, this title is pitched as an action RPG focused on a single player and their dog. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Japan.

During the Developer_Direct, the team will explain the development secrets behind the project and reveal details regarding the protagonist, Emma. This will include an overview of her “plant manipulation” abilities and how she interacts with her canine companion, Koo, during gameplay.
