Two Brain Games has announced a price reduction for their educational RPG, Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning. Designed for newcomers to Japanese language study, the game sets out to blend a classic top-down pixel art RPG experience with educational content, providing players with a tool in their journey towards learning Japanese vocabulary, customs, and common phrases.
Kagami’s base price will be reduced by 33%, from $14.99 down to to $9.99 USD, starting 3 January 2025, via the Steam digital storefront.
Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning takes inspiration from titles such as Stardew Valley, Final Fantasy, Earthbound, and Undertale, featuring a mix of lighthearted humour and perhaps the occasional psychological horror. The game incorporates turn-based battles influenced by the player’s Japanese knowledge, with enemy difficulty scaled to mastery. Additionally, the enemies themselves are inspired by yokai from Japanese folklore. Promoted features of the game include:
- Hand drawn Pixel Art and animation inspired by beloved 90s RPGs and other classic Indie games
- Classic turn-based RPG style combat with upgradable attacks
- Learn over 350 words and phrases
- 15 minigames to help players learn Hiragana, Katakana, and vocabulary words
- A Hiragana and Katakana reference guide that includes visual representations of mnemonics and a sound clip of the kana being pronounced
- Players can also practice their vocabulary anytime in “The Dojo”, which is a gamified version of flash cards with high scores and reward tokens that can be used to buy powerful in-game items
- A bonus area in the game that covers 52 of the most commonly used radicals that make up complex Kanji
- Kanji mode, which changes the vocab shown in battles and in the Dojo to Kanji instead of Hiragana for more advanced learners
- Original Music composed and created to fit the retro aesthetic
