Devolver Digital, in collaboration with Berlin-based indie developer René Rother, has announced Children of the Sun. This is a third-person shooter which aims to set itself out from the crowd with a ‘one-bullet’ gameplay mechanic. This game embarks players on a vengeful journey against a cult responsible for devastating the protagonist’s life, aiming to offer a blend of tactical gameplay, puzzle-solving, and stealth elements.
Children of the Sun distinguishes itself with a gameplay mechanic where the player, embodying THE GIRL, can fire only a single bullet per level. This bullet, however, is no ordinary projectile; upon impact, it can be redirected, curved around obstacles, and even smashed through armors and barriers, showcasing a range of gravity-defying ballistic feats. This unique approach not only challenges the player’s precision and strategic planning but also integrates puzzle-solving elements into the combat, making each level a thrilling experience of tactical sniping.
The narrative unfolds around THE GIRL’s quest for vengeance against THE CULT, an organization that promised its followers a utopian lifestyle free from modern life’s stresses but instead led them into ruin. As THE GIRL advances on her mission to confront THE LEADER of THE CULT, she unravels the grim realities and crimes perpetrated by the cult.
The game is designed with replayability in mind, offering fast-paced levels that encourage creativity and experimentation. Players are rewarded for style, efficiency, and speed, with a scoring system that promotes competition among friends and on the global leaderboards. The game’s visual and auditory presentation, inspired by Hitman, giallo movies, and Killer7, promises a stylish and trippy experience complemented by an experimental soundtrack.
Set for release on PC in 2024, Children of the Sun is set for release exclusively on the PC (as of writing), developed by René Rother and published by Devolver Digital.
