Antarctic cosmic horror comes with a rather different viewpoint in Penguin Colony: you investigate its mysteries as a penguin. Fellow Traveller and ORIGAME DIGITAL have announced that the new game from Umurangi Generation creator Tali Faulkner will now launch on PC on 16 October 2026, with Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 versions to follow next year.
That choice of protagonist shapes how you explore. Players inhabit different penguins, each with their own capabilities and restrictions, to navigate the ice and investigate the humans who have arrived there. Sliding down a slope, swimming beneath the surface or slipping through a space too small for a person all offer ways to move through the Antarctic setting.
There is also a question of what you can actually perceive. The game’s Insight system can change what players are able to notice, adding another consideration when trying to make sense of a discovery. According to the announcement, some mysteries are intended to extend beyond a first playthrough, encouraging players to compare findings and work through their interpretations together.
The human conflict unfolds in 1939. A Nazi expedition has come looking for an ancient power to support its claims of superiority, while a Kaitiaki mission is trying to stop the expedition and return whatever rests beneath the ice to sleep. From your considerably shorter vantage point, you follow both groups and gradually assemble a picture of their activities.
H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and John Carpenter’s The Thing are named as influences. The developers also point to an approach associated with earlier horror games, leaving room for uncertainty and experimentation as players decide what to make of the evidence they uncover.
Penguin Colony is scheduled to arrive on PC via Steam on 16 October 2026. A PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 edition is scheduled for release next year.
