Despite a rather tumultuous first few years post-launch, Cyberpunk 2077 is now in a position where developer CD Projekt RED are able to move forward with the next steps of the sci-fi gaming franchise. During today’s Xbox Games Showcase, the company confirmed that the long-awaited release date for Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion, titled Phantom Liberty, will launch on all supported platforms on 26 September 2023. Alongside the announcement, CD Projekt RED shared a new trailer providing a sneak peek at the storyline, characters, locations and new content awaiting players in a couple of months time.
Phantom Liberty will see players reassume the role of V, a cyberpunk mercenary. The expansion features a narrative involving a mission to save the President of the New United States of America after her orbital shuttle is shot down over Night City’s perilous Dogtown district. The storyline delves into espionage and political intrigue, as players will navigate through interactions with both influential figures and black-market mercenaries.
The expansion will imbue Cyberpunk 2077 with new content, characters, and locations. Among the new characters, players will encounter is FIA sleeper agent Solomon Reed, portrayed by actor Idris Elba. Additionally, Keanu Reeves makes a return as Johnny Silverhand. Players can also expect an array of new quests, vehicles, technology, cyberware, and weaponry. Furthermore, Phantom Liberty introduces a new Relic skill tree, allowing players more flexibility and options in customizing their playstyle.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC through various platforms including GOG, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. While the base game was released on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, you will need to move up to the current-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 to access this new content. Pre-orders are currently open across all platforms, and there’s an option to purchase a bundle that includes both the base game, which is necessary to play Phantom Liberty, and the expansion. As an added incentive, those who pre-order will gain early access to a special vehicle, the Quadra Sport R-7 “Vigilante”. PlayStation users will receive an extra bonus of three premium PlayStation Network profile avatars.
