Exploring New Babbage #1 – Where to Grab a Snack?

Take That (In-Game) Snap Daily Photo

Waking up in your new apartment at ‘The Nest’ in New Babbage’s ‘The Grande’ district, you take a peek from your bedside window to find another blistering gale sweeping the exterior. Although the internal heating keeps you at a comfortable temperature, just looking at the snowy landscape makes you crave a snack. Getting on a set of comfy clothes, you head downstairs and take the shuttle to ‘The Commons’.

Arriving within a minute of leaving your station, you trek up the many stairs to the open dome, watching many people jogging around the lap track or partaking in some yoga. Within your line of vision, you see three different cafes set up. You walk around looking at which one you will choose.

Do you crave…

Some Hot Food and a Coffee at Ellroy’s?

A Sandwich at Twyn’s?

Grab a Pre-Jog Tonic at Garcia’s Greens?

Once you make your decision, you head in, purchase the food/beverage of your choosing and go on with your day.

Star Citizen has just received its Alpha 3.9 release. Available to all backers as of immediately, this update brings various new features and enhancements including weather locomotion, performance optimisations, new moons to explore, a prison system and a new ship. But arguably the most significant inclusion is New Babbage, a new, more sophisticated, chic albeit a little clinical landing zone. This zone features many new artwork assets created by the design team, and over the coming weeks I hope to use the “Exploring New Babbage” series to highlight some of my favourite elements.

In development by Cloud Imperium Games and their studios across North America and Europe, Star Citizen is being helmed by Wing Commander (1990s) creator Chris Roberts. The game has currently been in a long-term alpha phase with no confirmed release date. Despite this, the studio has raised more than $250 million USD through on-going crowdfunding.

Take That (In-Game) Snap Daily Photo is an off-shoot of the Take That (In-Game) Snap article series, in which the first article focusing on Final Fantasy XIV was recently published. This looks at, celebrates and critiques how video game developers have implemented professional photography-like systems into their games. It will cover how the systems handle, just how accessible they are and, where applicable, how a modding community might be making these tools even better. With this Daily Photo spin-off series, I will be sharing individual photos from the games either covered or soon-to-be-covered.
