Offering the latest chapter in their now long-running narrative-oriented Dark Pictures Anthology series, Supermassive Games has released its latest project, Directive 8020. This cinematic science fiction survival horror game marks the newest installment in The Dark Pictures franchise and is available starting 17 May 2026 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
The game’s narrative is set against the backdrop of a dying Earth, where humanity’s survival depends on finding a new interstellar home. A small sliver of hope rests on a planet located 12 light years away called Tau Ceti f, but the mission faces a severe setback when the colony ship Cassiopeia crash-lands on the surface. The surviving crew members quickly discover they are trapped with an antagonistic alien organism that possesses the ability to perfectly mimic its prey. Players are forced to navigate intense paranoia and make difficult moral choices, balancing their own survival against the potential risk of endangering the entire population back on Earth.
This entry introduces several new gameplay mechanics to the established franchise formula, emphasizing real-time survival over traditional systems. Players must evade alien threats along the dark corridors of the ship by utilizing stealth, lightning reflexes, and improvised weapons. A new “Turning Points” story tree also allows players to rewind certain decisions, opening up hidden pathways and multiple narrative endings where any character can ultimately survive or perish.
Directive 8020 can be experienced as a solo adventure or shared with others through a local couch co-op “movie night” mode supporting up to five players, where participants take control of different crew members to face system failures and alien infiltrators together. While local multiplayer is included at launch, an online multiplayer feature is planned to arrive in a subsequent post-launch update.
Supermassive Games Creative Director Will Doyle manages the creative vision of the studio’s titles and highlighted the team’s pride in expanding their signature narrative style into a science fiction environment.
With Directive 8020, we’ve taken our signature horror narrative and everything we love about cinematic storytelling, pushing it all into new territory. We’re incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished, and bringing our storytelling into a sci-fi setting for the first time has been a hugely exciting step. The team has worked hard to refine every part of the experience, so we can’t wait for players to finally get their hands on it.
