Konami has unveiled fresh details about Silent Hill f, the newest addition to the long-running Silent Hill franchise. Set in 1960s Japan, this psychological horror game aims to present a haunting narrative that blends atmospheric tension with a unique cultural backdrop.
The game takes place in the remote mountain town of Ebisugaoka, where protagonist Shimizu Hinako’s ordinary life is upended when a thick fog transforms her home into a desolate, terrifying landscape. With the town seemingly abandoned and an unknown menace lurking in the mist, Hinako must navigate eerie remnants of her past, solve intricate puzzles, and face horrifying entities to survive. As she grapples with impossible choices, she is forced to confront the fine line between beauty and madness.
Writer Ryukishi07, known for Higurashi When They Cry and Umineko When They Cry, is leading the narrative for Silent Hill f. He describes his involvement in the project as deeply personal, reflecting on his long-standing admiration for the Silent Hill series:
To this day, I remember the feeling of my first encounter with the strangling and oppressive atmosphere of Silent Hill. It still deeply haunts me, and it still utterly fascinates me. It’s an honor to find myself involved with a series I have so many memories with. I’ve poured all my efforts into this story, so much so that I don’t think I would mind if it was the last thing I ever wrote.
To me, the Silent Hill series is more than just a collection of stories, it’s a medium; an amazing, phenomenal way of exploring and experiencing a person’s heart and mind. It’s my hope that players out there will come to appreciate it in the same way. To all of our overseas friends, I hope you’ll enjoy a look at what Silent Hill might be like if set somewhere a little different, like Japan.
The game also features the artistic contributions of kera, a celebrated illustrator and monster designer influenced by Silent Hill 2. kera has worked to create a visual experience that respects the franchise’s legacy while exploring new creative directions. Musically, Silent Hill f will see the return of composer Akira Yamaoka, whose work has been synonymous with the series for over 25 years. Yamaoka will compose the music for the game’s Fog World, blending haunting melodies with the series’ psychological horror roots. Kensuke Inage, a composer credited in over 30 video games, will create the music for the game’s Otherworld, introducing an auditory contrast between the two realms by integrating Japanese musical elements with contemporary styles.
Leading the project is producer Motoi Okamoto, who aims to reinvigorate the Silent Hill series by incorporating its first-ever Japanese setting. He highlights the game’s approach to horror, balancing classic Silent Hill psychological elements with the aesthetics and fears rooted in Japanese folklore.
Silent Hill f is expected to challenge players with unsettling themes and deep psychological horror, reflecting the customs and culture of 1960s Japan. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Microsoft Store, and the Epic Games Store.
