Capcom Announces New Ōkami Title at The Game Awards 2024

Capcom has revealed that a new instalment in the beloved Ōkami series is officially in development. This marks a long-awaited return for the action-adventure franchise franchise, those original chapter was originally released in 2006 featuring its unique Japanese-style setting, Sumi-e-inspired visuals, and the Celestial Brush system.

The new project sees Hideki Kamiya, the original game’s director, returning to lead the development. The game is being co-developed by a team of studios, including M-TWO Inc., Machine Head Works Inc., and CLOVERS Inc., with contributions from staff who worked on the original Ōkami.

While we will undoubtedly hear more about the narrative and gameplay of this new instalment in the coming months, Capcom confirmed that Amaterasu, the series’ iconic wolf protagonist, is back and shall embark on another adventure filled with heartwarming moments and thrilling challenges. Fans can also expect the continuation of Ōkami’s signature blend of artistic visuals and Japanese folklore-inspired storytelling.

Capcom also released a teaser trailer and website to give fans an early glimpse of the project, which is in its early stages of development. While no release window has been announced, the development team hopes to meet the expectations of both long-time fans and newcomers to the series.

Originally released for the PlayStation 2, Ōkami tells the story of Amaterasu, a sun goddess who takes the form of a wolf to restore life and beauty to a world plagued by darkness. Known for its stunning art style, unique gameplay mechanics, and heartfelt narrative, the game continues to be celebrated almost two decades after its debut.

Hideki Kamiya shared his thoughts on the announcement:

To all of you

“Until next time…”

How long has it been since the story was concluded with that? I didn’t think the day would really come, where I’d return to Ōkami and continue the story with my own hands. Even at this very moment, my body is filled with both a cautious surprise that this is not a dream, and a joy that cannot be described in words.

Everyone who has worked so hard to make this project a reality, the friends who believed in me and gathered at CLOVERS Inc., and most importantly, the voices of so many of you who have continued to support Ōkami even after such a long time: all of this has come together to create this miracle, for which I am deeply grateful.

Like a strong rising sun, this project is finally in motion. But it’s still a small bud that is blossoming. We are ready to fill this new Ōkami with many colorful flowers, and to do our best to fulfil the promise of “next time” in the best way.

Everyone please wait with anticipation.
