Peasant, the forthcoming action RPG from Harakka Studio, achieved its Kickstarter funding target within 24 hours and according to the studio (perhaps aspirationally), is poised to exceed 450 percent of its original goal. With one week remaining in the campaign, backers still have a chance to obtain exclusive rewards and help unlock additional stretch goals.
In this single-player medieval fantasy game, players begin as a humble farmer exploring a vast open world teeming with unique cultures. The game emphasises progression through the acquisition of strengths and skills, with every player decision impacting the game world. The game seeks allows players to interact with all creatures, including the ability to pet even mythical dragons.
Peasant aims to offer a distinctive twist on the RPG genre by positioning the player not as a traditional hero but as an ordinary individual. Heroes in this world are depicted as corrupt figures who take without consequence. Players start as a peasant disillusioned by the abuses of adventurers, growing in strength and rallying allies to challenge the heroes. The game’s narrative promises an epic struggle for justice, driven by the player’s choices.
Each playthrough of Peasant aims to be unique, with the player’s interactions influencing their character and the world. The game’s karma system records decisions, guiding the player down various paths. Actions such as deforestation can permanently block progress in certain paths, like the druidic path. This system is conceptualized so that players’ choices significantly shape their journey, allowing them to be symbols of peace, bringers of death, or anything in between.
The Kickstarter campaign for Peasant concludes on 2 August 2024, having raised 131,880 euros out of an initial 30,000 euros goal as of writing.
