On the Nintendo 3DS, Square Enix found some success with their medley of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy games. Given the many iconic tracks which have been prominently featured in the series since its very first game back in 1987, a rhythm spin-off title made perfect sense. While offering a handful of great tracks, up until its most recently released instalment, Kingdom Hearts‘ soundtrack was mostly passable with a mix of rearrangements and new works. Therefore, today’s announcement comes as a bit of a surprise.
Square Enix and Disney earlier today announced that a new rhythm game titled Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is in development for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch; with a planned release date of 2020.
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is intended to feature 140 musical tracks along with 20 characters from the series. Players will travel through many Disney worlds in the shoes of Sora and iconic Disney characters, taking down waves of enemies to the beat of both Kingdom Hearts series music and classic Disney tunes. Both single-player and online-multiplayer modes will be available, allowing fans of the series to enjoy the music alone or along with others.
Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the official Kingdom Hearts III Original Soundtrack will be available globally from Fall 2020 (Spring 2020 for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere).
Developed for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and marking the franchise’s debut on the Nintendo Switch, Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is due to launch later in 2020.
