Those familiar with retro gaming will likely now about the Map 256 Glitch in the earlier Pac-Man games. Skilled gamers who were able to make it past 255 levels, found themselves in a number of unique situations – from garbled levels to blank screens. You can read more about this glitch and while it occurs HERE. This is one glitch where the original development team, Bandai Namco, haven’t simply swept it under the rug for eternity. Instead, they collaborated with the development teams at Hipster Whale and 3 Sprockets to create a game based around the glitch. This game, known as PAC-MAN 256, was first released on iOS and Android platforms. But its smartphone exclusivity is now over.
Adding a new style of gameplay to the classic PAC-MAN experience, this edition see’s players having to both overcome the notorious ghost ensemble: Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde; while also trying to outrun the 256 glitch.
Marking the PAC-MAN franchise’s 36th Anniversary, Bandai Namco Entertainment announced in May that PAC-MAN 256 would be heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms. The game has recently landed on each platforms respective digital store.
Pac-Man 256 will come with a number of new features exclusive to console versions. Not only will there be social sharing options and ten themes unlocked, but it will be possible to play with up to four friends via the local co-op multiplayer mode. Players will have to work together to eat all Pac-Dots & Power Pellets, outrun the 256 glitch, and overcome the notorious ghost ensemble: Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde.
