[E3 2016] Work on Skyrim Hasn’t Concluded Yet, With Special Edition Announced for PC and Consoles

-

To me, Bethesda Softworks’ 2011 open world action RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the greats. This is not necessarily because of the experience it provides entirely, but rather how it has served as a framework for the modding community to expand upon. Whether you are after new armour designs, distinct dungeons to explore, something a little more racy or even content which goes well beyond the boundaries of the initial gameplay mechanics – there is a good chance that you will find something of interest from the wider community. While I have never actually finished the game myself, I have still managed to clock in several hundred hours of gametime simply via deviating from the main story and exploring everything on offer.

But Bethesda Softworks isn’t completely done with Skyrim just yet. To be available on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – they have taken the chance during E3 2016 to announce The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. This newest edition of Skyrim will feature the core game and its expansion add-ons, along with all-new features including remastered art and effects, volumetric god rays, dynamic depth of field, screen-space reflections, and more.

When Bethesda Softworks developed Fallout 4, they included a system where mods could be run on console versions. Similar functionality will be offered to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Skyrim Special Edition. It is unknown whether or not this new version of Skyrim will conflict with mods currently available on the PC.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition will be available on all three platforms starting October 28 2016. If you own the PC version of Skyrim and own all its add-ons (Specifically Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn) on Steam, you will receive a free upgrade to the Special Edition when it launches on October 28th. The same will apply to anyone who has purchased the Legendary Edition on Steam.
