Id Software Co-Founders John Romero and Adrian Carmack Begin Crowdfunding for BLACKROOM

Described as a “visceral, action-packed FPS set in a holographic simulation gone rogue” and seeking to “harken back to classic FPS play with a mixture of exploration, speed, and intense weaponized combat”, a new crowdfunding campaign has begun through Kickstarter for a game known as BLACKROOM. Being created by the team at Night Work Games USA, this is a project being helmed by renown id Software co-founders John Romero (Game Lead) and Adrian Carmack (Art Director).

Offering a combination of single-player and multiplayer first-person shooter gameplay, this game is set to see players navigate a range of holographic worlds from Victorian mansions to Wild West Ghost Towns. The actual story takes place at a tech company known as HOXAR, which has created technology which allows people to navigate fully-realized and highly realistic holographic worlds. It is technology which has been used by military and police organisations, those looking to train in specialist fields and the general public. But something goes wrong when testing new “Predictive Memory technology”, where the real world begins blending with the virtual. From there… you take control of Dr. Santiago Sonora (Chief hNode Engineer), who must use all your first-person combat and perceptual skills to navigate their way around frighting and deadly levels. You can read a lot more about this game, its story and gameplay via the official crowdfunding page.

BLACKROOM is shaping up to be a sizable game, and therefore its pledge goal is a somewhat larger sum than usual. The development team are currently looking for $700,000 USD, of which they have currently raised $82,965 from 1,406 backers. The cheapest pledge need for a copy of the game is the $29.00 “HOXAR GAMER” package which includes a digital copy of the game, backer exclusive starter weapon skin and more. There are a range of pledge tiers ranging from $5.00 to $10,000 – offering a range of goodies both digital and physical. They are also running a range of community “Achievements”, where backers and non-backers alike can complete tasks to potentially unlock extra goodies.
