Hyrule Warriors: Legends a Little More than One Month Away From Launch

While I am left wondering if this game might have been better off as a New Nintendo 3DS exclusive title rather than made available for the entire Nintendo 3DS library, given how it fared on the Wii U, Nintendo are a little more than a month away from launching Hyrule Warriors: Legends. To be available on March 24th 2016, Hyrule Warriors: Legends is an enhanced portable port of the original Wii U hack ‘n’ slash game which pits characters from a variety of Legend of Zelda games against swarms of enemies in a new mission to save Hyrule from the clutches of evil.

One of the main modes in this game is the “Legend Mode”, a story mode which see’s a sorceress by the name of Cia ripping time and space apart. A new Link must team up with Impa, Sheik, the white sorceress Lana and a group of other familiar faces as they battle through battlegrounds inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. As the game is developed by Dynasty Warriors developer Omega Force, you can expect a similar experience to their past games, albeit with a Zelda flair to it.

Hyrule Warriors: Legends comes with a number of new features. This includes a four-chapter epilogue based on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and a five-chapter story based on series newcomer Linkle, a dual-crossbow-wielding Cucco farmer who believes her heirloom compass means that she’s destined for greater things. The Wind Waker chapter will also see Toon Link, Tetra and King Daphnes make a playable appearance, while Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask will also be making their playable debut. For those with a Wii U copy of the game, Nintendo will be including a code in all new copies of Hyrule Warriors: Legends which will allow you to download these new characters into the original game. These characters can only be used in Adventure Mode and Free Mode, meaning the code doesn’t unlock all Hyrule Warriors: Legends content on the Wii U.

Adding another new feature into the game, which doesn’t seem as notable as others, is the “My Fairy Mode” system. When players explore Adventure Mode there are fairies to be found, each of whom can be levelled up to bestow additional benefits in battle across all modes. By feeding them and dressing them in new costumes, players can increase their trust, change their personality traits, or strengthen their Fairy Magic. Time will tell if this is anything particularly memorable.

As mentioned above, Hyrule Warriors: Legends is supported on all Nintendo 3DS consoles. While I might be pleasantly surprised, I wouldn’t have personally objected to them making it a New Nintendo 3DS exclusive game, allowing them to deliver an experience closer to that of the Xenoblade Chronicles port Nintendo released last year. However, those who play the game on a New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL system will be able to enjoy an enhanced experience through “additional horsepower” and “features” of the system including C-Stick support. Those who can take advantage of amiibo support will be able to use the amiibo figures based on The Legend of Zelda characters to generate more powerful versions of previously-unlocked weapons for their respective characters. This includes the new Wolf Link amiibo that will be available in a special bundle with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, which will bestow these more powerful weapons onto Midna or Twili Midna.

Hyrule Warriors: Legends is set for release on the Nintendo 3DS starting March 24 2016.
