While I personally expect to see more interest in the Wii U version, especially considering the goodies Nintendo have lined up for the console, it has been confirmed that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold 2.8 million units worldwide and counting. Nintendo claim that the game has “resonated with fans and critics alike”, and have high expectations of a strong Christmas season. But with the Nintendo 3DS edition now out on the market, this has allowed Nintendo to confirm release plans for the Wii U version. This edition will be available on store shelves from December 6th 2014 either standalone or part of a special edition.

Super Smash Bros. will be released a week after Nintendo’s first wave of amiibo figures hit store shelves on November 29th. A second wave of amiibo figures starring Zelda, Diddy Kong, Luigi, Little Mac, Pit and Captain Falcon are also planned for a December 12th release. All amiibo figures from both waves will support Super Smash Bros for Wii U.

Nintendo GameCube Controller set up

While the Nintendo Gamecube may not have been the most successful gaming console, it did have (in my opinion) the best of any Nintendo controller. It wasn’t gimmicky (Wiimote) or hard to hold (N64), but instead had a fantastic button layout that loaned itself well to Super Smash Bros Melee at the time.

At a price of $89.95, Nintendo will be releasing a special Super Smash Bros. for Wii U + GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U of the game which comes with an adapter which allows you to connect a Gamecube or Wavebird controller to the Wii U console. Individual controllers can be purchased for $49.95, while adapters can be purchasable individually through Nintendo Customer Service.
