Catherine – Playstation 3 Pre-order Edition Package Review

Catherine - Playstation 3 Pre-order Edition Package Review 1Nope, this is not the full review of the game yet, as I am now engrossed in playing it, however I have decided to take the time and review the actual packaging and bonus extras included with the game, similar to what I did with the NIS America anime compilations. In the course of this mini review I shall be reviewing: The cover art, the manual design, the artbook and the contents of the soundtrack. You may find this as a weird thing for someone to do a mini-review on, however I always think first impressions are important – and for some it may involve finding this game on the shelf and judging the game by its cover.

First off, the cover art. I will be honest, I am not that keen on the PS3 cover art for the game. Call me bias for being a Katherine fan, however I do think the design implemented was stronger on the XBox360 cover. I shall leave you to judge it through the image on the left. The back cover on the other hand is one that is overly crowded but I have to say it would be one of my favourite back covers for a game I have seen in a while. Could have done with some different screenshots but I think the overall design was well done.

In the last few years, I have seen a lack of effort going into most manual designs – with them getting smaller and less detailed as in-game tutorials and guides get more complicated. Therefore, I was very happy to open up the game case to see a slightly heavier manual then I am used to, in full colour with a pink and black scheme – which goes with the game. There are plenty of pretty pictures and detailed information throughout it.

In terms of the artbook, I felt it was more of a holder for the soundtrack CD with images in it then an artbook with a CD in it. The soundtrack CD is stored on the back inside cover of the book and when inside does make the book hard to read through – so you might be better off storing the CD somewhere else. The artbook itself is a softcover 32-page landscape book and is slightly smaller then I was expecting (About the size of a normal Blu-ray case). There is some good artwork in the book, and the text is kept (Besides the artwork obviously) to three primary colours – Black, Pink and White.

Inside it there are comments from Katsura Hashino (Producer/Director), Shigenori Soejima (Character Designer) and the famous Shoji Meguro (Sound Composer) which are both enjoyable, a track listing including comments for the songs on the disc, character profiles (Which includes full page character designs), art book cover design process (Errr…. don’t really get the point of this) and the normal art work and game cover designs.

Finally, the pre-order soundtrack is the last item on the reviewing block. There are a total of 11 songs on the soundtrack which are mostly remixed versions of famous songs in the classical music genre such as those from Chopin, Bach and Beethoven. As most of the songs in the game are like this – I feel that this is an accurate representation of the games music and they chose the best variety for the bonus disc. Just wish they could have had a complete OST like they are doing for The King of Fighters XIII.

Anyway, I was overall very pleased with their game package, and the full review of this game should be up sometime in the next day or so. Until then, I am hanging with the (C/K)atherines and chilling with the Sheep!
