Opera Australia and LPD Productions has unveiled the cast for its upcoming production of Jonathan Larson’s acclaimed musical RENT, which will open at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House from 27 September 2025.
Leading the cast is Henry Rollo (Rocky Horror Show) as Mark, a struggling filmmaker. He is joined by Harry Targett (Dear Evan Hansen) as Roger, a musician living with HIV. Kristin Paulse (Tina – The Tina Turner Musical) plays Mimi, a vibrant dancer, while Calista Nelmes (Jesus Christ Superstar) reprises her award-winning role as Maureen. Imani Williams (Hadestown) portrays Joanne, Maureen’s determined and ambitious partner.
Googoorewon Knox (Hamilton) will take on the role of Collins, a philosophical and compassionate friend, with Jesse Dutlow (& Juliet) as Angel, the charismatic drag performer living with HIV. Tana Laga’aia (Jesus Christ Superstar) plays Benny, the former friend-turned-landlord of several characters.
Supporting the principal cast are Anna Francesca Armenia, Kobe Brown, Sam Harmon, Lawrence Hawkins, Carmel Rodrigues, Chad Rosete, Eliza Soriano, Stacey Thomsett, Bree Tipoki, and Theodore Williams.
Directed by Shaun Rennie, fresh from his work on Guys & Dolls on Sydney Harbour, this new staging seeks to bring together a dynamic cast of Australian performers. Rennie expressed his enthusiasm for the ensemble, stating:

Set in New York City’s East Village during the early 1990s, RENT follows a group of young artists and friends as they grapple with love, illness, identity, and community. Inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, the musical remains a powerful exploration of resilience and hope, featuring iconic numbers such as Seasons of Love, Take Me or Leave Me, and La Vie Bohème.
