While sing-along versions of musicals might often be limited to the less-serious disco musicals, if even then, the Sydney Opera House will host a unique event inviting fans to sing along with RENT, Jonathan Larson’s acclaimed long-running musical. This special performance will take place on Thursday 23 October 2025 at the Joan Sutherland Theatre. Tickets to this performance are now on sale via the Opera Australia website.
For one night only, audiences are encouraged to join in the music of this iconic show, with lyrics displayed via surtitles during select songs. While the production itself remains unchanged, audience members are welcome to sing along at designated moments and are also invited to dress in their Bohemian best to fully embrace the spirit of the show.
Set in New York City’s East Village during the early 1990s, RENT follows a group of young artists and friends navigating the challenges of poverty, illness, and identity. Its themes of love, loss, and resilience continue to resonate with audiences more than two decades after its debut. The musical features a celebrated score including Seasons of Love, Take Me or Leave Me, and La Vie Bohème, and is inspired by Puccini’s opera La Bohème.
This critically acclaimed production comes to Sydney following a national tour and is led by director Shaun Rennie.
