The Turn of the Screw Opera: Cast Announced for Hayes Theatre Co’s Spine-Chilling Production

Craig Baldwin, in collaboration with Hayes Theatre Co, has disclosed key cast members for the upcoming chamber opera The Turn of the Screw, set to debut in August. This occasion marks a significant first for Hayes Theatre Co, as it introduces opera to its intimate venue (most often frequented by musical works) with Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. Under the direction of Craig Baldwin, known for his work on Consent, John, and The Flick with Outhouse Theatre Co, the production promises to showcase some of Sydney’s emerging opera talents.

Sophie Salvesani, celebrated for her roles in La Traviata and West Side Story, has been cast as the governess, with another performer yet to be announced. The pivotal role of Peter Quint will see Kanen Breen and Ben Rasheed sharing the stage in alternating performances. Additionally, Margaret Trubiano and Ruth Strutt will portray Mrs. Grose, with further casting details to be revealed later.

Director Craig Baldwin expressed his excitement about bringing opera to the Hayes for the first time, sharing:

I’m thrilled to be bringing opera to the Hayes for the first time. And what better way to do it, than with a mid-winter ghost story? In that uniquely intimate setting, every whispered secret, every ghostly apparition and every bit of haunting melody will envelop the audience. It will absolutely be a one-of-a-kind experience.

The Turn of the Screw narrates the eerie tale of a young governess tasked with the care of two orphaned children, Flora and Miles, in a secluded English manor. She soon finds herself entangled in a chilling mystery involving the estate and the children, which blurs the lines between reality and the supernatural. Benjamin Britten’s score, known for its haunting beauty and complex harmonies, complements the gothic elements of Henry James’s original novel, enriching the opera’s atmospheric tension.

The production’s creative team includes Musical Director Francis Greep, Set and Costume Designer Emma Vine, and Lighting Designer Morgan Moroney, each bringing their expertise to ensure a captivating staging.

The Turn of the Screw is set to be performed at Hayes Theatre Co from 16 August until 15 September 2024. Performances are scheduled from Tuesday to Saturday at 7:30 pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2 pm, a special Thursday matinee on 5 September at 2 pm, and Sunday shows at 5 pm. Ticket prices range from $75 to $89. Those interested in booking a ticket or two should check out the Hayes Theatre Co website for the latest booking information.
