Opera Australia’s Digital Aida Comes to Brisbane For Seven Performances Only in December

Complementing Wagner’s Ring Cycle which is set to commence at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) from 1-21 December 2023, Opera Australia, in collaboration with Opera Queensland, are also set to present its digital rendition of Verdi’s celebrated Aida at Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Lyric Theatre during the month. Following its debut in 2018, this is the world’s initial attempt to infuse opera with state-of-the-art integrated digital technologies, an attempt at propelling a timeless art form into the modern era.

The grandeur of Verdi’s monumental opera is accentuated by ten dynamic LED screens that move gracefully around the stage. This is one such effort seeking to immerse audiences in a world of evocative images, breathtaking landscapes, and profound symbolism. At the helm of this visual masterpiece is Italian Director Davide Livermore, who seeks to merge captivating choreography, visually arresting costumes, and magnificent vocal performances, ensuring audiences are transported on a remarkable and awe-inducing journey.

The ensemble features soprano Natalie Aroyan, of Australian-Armenian descent, performing alongside OA’s Diego Torre, who will assume the role of Radamès. The stage will also see French-Russian Elena Gabouri as Amneris, and the gifted bass Alexander Vinogradov reprising his role as Ramfis. Local talents, Brisbane-native Michael Honeyman and Gold Coast-resident bass singer Conal Coad, will also grace the stage as Amonasro and the King respectively. Furthermore, the Opera Queensland Chorus will unite with the Opera Australia Chorus, with Italian Maestro Lorenzo Passerini leading the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Aida debuted in 1871, and is considered a testament to Giuseppe Verdi’s prowess as a leading composer of his era. The opera, famed for its intricate orchestral prelude and renowned Triumphal March, has always been an extravaganza – and will hopefully continue to be in its new digital-supported form.
