UPDATE 13 JUNE: Performers in the inaugural concert has been updated.

While COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted incrementally, performing arts venues will likely be one of the last to open up their doors to the general public once more. This is not only due to the venues they perform in housing hundreds if not thousands of people, but producers requiring a majority of the theatre to be filled to be financially viable. All of the Queensland State Companies are turning to online platforms to tide their creatives and patrons over until they can open once more. Detailing a new initiative on their end, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra has this week confirmed they are going ahead and producing a series of bi-monthly concerts from the QSO Studio under the banner ‘The Studio Sessions‘.

These twice-monthly concerts will feature unique works for small ensembles, featuring a diverse range of Australian and international composers. The first of these ‘Studio Sessions‘ will be screened via the QSO Youtube Channel on Sunday 14 June 2020 at 3.00pm.

Performing in the concert will be Acting Principal Cello Hyung Suk Bae, Section Principal Viola Imants Larsens, Section Principal Flute Alison Mitchell and Principal Harp Jill Atkinson; performing a repertoire celebrating the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and Claude Debussy. To be specific, the works being performed include:

  • Bach – Cello Suite No.1 with Hyung Suk Bae (cello)
  • Beethoven – Duet mit zwei obligaten Augengläsern, WoO 32 mvt.1 with Imants Larsens (viola) and Hyung Suk Bae (cello)
  • Debussy – Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp with Imants Larsens (viola), Alison Mitchell (flute) and Jill Atkinson (harp)

Further performances are scheduled for Sunday 28 June 2020 at 3.00pm, Saturday 11 July 2020 at 7.30pm and Saturday 25 July 2020 at 7.30pm.

As an Orchestra For Everyone, we are extremely disappointed we are unable to deliver live concerts in the Concert Hall or in other venues to the people of Queensland, but we believe it’s more important than ever to share our music to keep people connected. So, we are delighted to introduce this new series, The Studio Sessions, to our audience until we can sit together again in the Concert Hall or on the grass to listen to our wonderful Orchestra live, please enjoy!
