Among the various other season shows performed at The Arts Centre Gold Coast each year, the annual stage musical is the one I personally look forward to most. Back in 2015 the company managed to present an absolutely spectacular season of Miss Saigon, which I felt could “rival those that travel across Australia” and featured a cast that “represented their character roles with enthusiasm and skill”. But a year later the winds have begun to change, and from this Friday, a very famous nanny will be descending upon their Arts Theatre.
The Arts Centre Gold Coast are set to kick off their local production of Mary Poppins on Friday 17 June for a strictly limited season. With several matinee and evening sessions on offer, guests will be able to watch this adaptation of Disney’s successful feature film, performed by some very talented local artists.
The titular character will be portrayed by Georgina Hopson, one of my favourite up-and-coming actors who last year starred in Harvest Rain’s productions of The Pirates of Penzance as Mabel and Into the Woods as Cinderella. Joining her on-stage as the lovable Bert is Max Patterson, who has returned back to his home town following a tour of Singapore and Europe. Also joining the lead cast is Stephen Hirst as George Banks and Carla Tooma as Winfred Banks. Unlike their other recent productions, Mary Poppins requires children in the roles of Jane and Michael Banks. Taking on the role of Jane are young actors Jamieson Schmitzer and Elysium Hipwood, while Michael Fryer and Elijah Fern will perform as Michael.
Mary Poppins will be held at The Arts Centre Gold Coast’s Arts Theatre from Friday 17 June until Saturday 25 June – with a total of eight shows being performed. Standard Adult Ticket prices at just $65.00, with reduced prices available for concession card holders ($59.00), Groups of 6+ ($54.00) and Students/Children ($42.00).
