Murder Princess – Volume 1

As you may recall, I reviewed the whole anime OVA series which can be found here. I really enjoyed the series, especially at the beginning and I have to say, I was really impressed with the manga adaptation, except one flaw with my copy which I will mention later on in the post. However, will this have an effect on my overall review of the manga? More after the jump….

Artwork: I have never before seen any manga by Sekihiko Inui before, and looking at the quality of the artwork, I am very impressed. The character expressions are displayed well and throughout the manga, all of them have had their emotions displayed at a high level, such to a level that when a character is angry, it is obvious that they are angry however, if they are really angry, it is definately obivous that they are VERY angry! Character designs have been well thought out, with all the characters looking unique and in the case of Princess Alita, when she and Falis switch souls, there is a much evident change in her appearance, even if it is the same body. The characters of Dominikov and Pete, as well as the Androids both give of different first impressions however. If you were to look at it, the androids would be the “good guys” while Dominikov and Pete would give off an impression of being the “bad guys”, however, it slowly changes throughout the manga.

Characters/Storyline: Before I go any further, I hate to say this, my copy was missing Chapter 4, so I cannot comment on anything regarding the chapter. However, from the other four chapters (or five if you consider Chapter 5 being repeated twice), they were all very well planned out. The storyline involves the princess of the town “Forland” named Alita who escapes from her castle after a Professor named Akamashi along with his two young androids Yuna and Anna attempts to take the crown from themselves. Alita however falls of a cliff and knocks heads with a bounty hunter named Falis. They end up switching souls so Falis is now princess and Alita is now in the body of the bounty hunter. Falis willingly offers to help and from there… the story continues. A rather interesting story, may seem a bit basic at first but gets interesting almost straight away… shame about the missing chapter through.

Extras:

  • Character List
  • Afterword
  • Chapter 2 Preview (Not that I needed it)
  • Congratulation Notes from “Pop” and “Shonen Sasaki”
  • Lots of artwork of Yuna/Anna and Professor Akamashi
  • Redemption of a Volume 1 Sticker (Not valid any longer through)

Overall Review:

Artwork: 4.5
Characters: 3.5
Storyline: 4.5
Extras: 4
Quality: 3 “I really hate to penalize such a high quality book, but I cannot overlook a missing chapter D=)
Overall: 3.9 (B)
