Supanova: Pop Culture Expo’s Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth Legs Cancelled Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

In an announcement which was pretty much expected, the team behind Australia’s annual Supanova: Pop Culture Expo conventions have confirmed that their Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth legs for 2020 have been cancelled. Surprisingly the Sydney leg on 5-6 December 2020 are still planned to go ahead, although tickets will not go on sale until they can be sure that the event will be proceeding. Were it to go ahead, unless there was a massive change in border restrictions, only local guests would be likely to take place.

A full statement, attributed to “The Supanova Comic Con & Gaming Team” can be found below.

This has been an extremely challenging year for all of us, to say the least. The unpredictability of this pandemic has made it almost impossible to plan events with any degree of certainty, which has resulted in Supanova’s 2020 events being postponed and re-scheduled more than once.

We have worked tirelessly to create an opportunity for Supa-Fans to gather together and celebrate their fandoms as a community. Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions across the country have not eased to the point where we can guarantee November as a viable option, therefore we have made the difficult decision to cancel all of our events scheduled for November 2020, that being Supanova in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

At this stage, Supanova 2020 – Sydney is still scheduled for 5-6 December 2020. As events are starting to resume in New South Wales, such as Sydney’s Annual Wedding Expo and the NRL Grand Final, along with the slow but steady relaxation of border restrictions across the East Coast, we are continuing to work with the Sydney Showground towards our December dates. As always, we will be adhering to the advice of the NSW Chief Medical Officer, and should December also look to be unviable, we will unfortunately have to close the book on Sydney for the year, as well.

Once again, we will not be putting tickets on sale until such time as we are able to guarantee that the show will proceed. Exhibitors will have been contacted directly to discuss their options, so please check your emails and any mail filters you may have.

This years has been a hard blow to the events industry, and there’s nothing we’d like more than to be celebrating all the fun, festivities and fandom that Supanova has to offer, so we thank you all for your continued patience and understanding. We hope that the next time we make a post like this, it will be to detail all the awesome things coming to our December show and beyond, with our 2021 calendar returning to Supanova’s usual schedule of April (Melbourne and Gold Coast), June (Sydney and Perth) and November (Brisbane and Adelaide).

We can’t wait to see you all again as soon as we safely can.
