Penguin Highway (ペンギン・ハイウェイ) is a 2018 anime feature film directed by Hiroyasu Ishida with animation by Studio Colorido, which adapted the work of Tomihiko Morimi’s original novel by the same name. It is a sci-fi coming of age story which puts viewers in the shoes of 4th grade budding genius Aoyama, who is perplexed by the sudden appearance of penguins appearing in his sleepy town hundreds of miles from the sea. When he discovers that the arrival of the penguins is related to a mysterious young woman from his dentist’s office, they team up for an unforgettable summer adventure!
Australian anime publisher Madman Entertainment first released Penguin Highway across Australia and New Zealand on Blu-ray last year, following a short theatrical season at select venues across the countries. While I can strongly recommend nabbing yourself a home video release copy of the film, as of this weekend, you have another option. The full 118-minute film is now available to view on the AnimeLab video-on-demand streaming service. The official stream supports both the original Japanese audio and English dubbing, and can be watched at resolutions up to 1080p.
Unlike some other animated feature films published on AnimeLab in recent weeks, Penguin Highwa does not appear to be a timed release. Still, this is no reason not to make it your pick of weekend anime binge!
