While there are a few references in other aspects of the .hack media franchise, .hack//Liminality is one you could comfortably skip and not risk missing out on much. However if you do get your hands on a copy of the series, it serves as an interesting tie-in across platforms and does add an additional dynamic to the world during the events the games – with are usually only covered in brief in-game news prompts at most.
At the very least, they are much better incorporated than the Online Jack episodes included in .hack//G.U.
